Spanish counts in one regular system with a few spelling habits. One to fifteen are words of their own; sixteen to twenty-nine are written as one word (dieciséis, veintitrés); from thirty on, tens and units are linked with y (treinta y uno, 31).

| 10 | diez |
| 11 | once |
| 12 | doce |
| 15 | quince |
| 16 | dieciséis |
| 20 | veinte |
| 21 | veintiuno |
| 30 | treinta |
| 31 | treinta y uno |
| 40 | cuarenta |

| 100 | cien (ciento) |
| 500 | quinientos |
| 1,000 | mil |
| 1,000,000 | un millón |
Three things trip beginners up. Uno becomes un before a masculine noun and una before a feminine one (un libro, una casa, veintiún años). Cien is exactly 100; above it the form is ciento (ciento cinco, 105), and the hundreds agree with the noun (doscientas personas), with 500, 700 and 900 irregular: quinientos, setecientos, novecientos. And mil takes no plural and no un: two thousand is dos mil.
